Description

Checkter, the 2021 Oldenburg Stallion of the Year, excels as a popular sire in modern show jumping breeding. Blood-influenced and highly athletic, Checkter sets groundbreaking standards in both breeding and sport.

Under the saddle of Germany’s U25 top rider Leonie Böckmann and later under Irish Olympic rider Cian O’Connor, Checkter celebrated his own international top successes, competing up to 1.55 m courses. With remarkable elasticity, intelligence, and caution, Checkter captivated show jumping fans worldwide. Even at a young age, the exceptional quality of this striking grey stallion became evident during his HLP sport test, which he completed with the outstanding top score of 9.66. Combined with an excellent first foal crop, this outstanding performance secured him the title of Oldenburg Ic main premium winner.

In breeding, Checkter is already making a name for himself, producing offspring successful up to 1.45 m as well as several licensed sons, including premium stallions and high-priced auction highlights in Westphalia and Hanover. In recognition of his breeding achievements and sporting successes, Checkter was awarded the prestigious title of Oldenburg VTV Stallion of the Year in 2021.

His sire, Cellestial, is considered one of the best German show jumping sires of all time. A successful competitor for Germany in Nations Cups under André Thieme, Cellestial gained particular prominence through his outstanding offspring. Thirty-five of his sons have been licensed, and around 80 of his progeny have achieved S-level successes, many at the highest international level. One of Cellestial’s most notable sons, Chap I, made history as the sire of European Champion and Aachen Grand Prix winner DSP Chakaria/André Thieme (GER).

The dam’s sire, Lord Pezi, established himself as a foundation stallion in international show jumping breeding. Successful internationally under Gilbert Böckmann, Lord Pezi is the sire of countless 1.60 m show jumping stars. Among the many successful offspring of Lord Pezi, some of the most notable include international top performers such as Louis/Beat Mändli (SUI), Lord Pezi Junior/Pedro Veniss (BRA), Lord Pepsi/Paul Estermann (SUI), Jackie Brown/Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum (GER), Pezi/Beat Mändli (SUI), Lariccello/Helen McNaught (GBR), Le-Champ/Mikhail Safronov (RUS), Lord Spezi/Margie Engle Goldstein (USA), Little Pezi/Mario Stevens (GER), and Londinium/Lillie Keenan (USA).

In the third generation, Ile de Bourbon contributes the lasting influence of Thoroughbred refinement and nobility to Checkter’s pedigree. Ile de Bourbon, a son of the Anglo-Arabian Inschallah AA, shone in international sport up to 1.60 m under Thomas Frühmann (AUT).

The foundation of Checkter’s breeding lineage is one of Germany’s most successful dam lines for show jumping, carefully cultivated over generations by the Böckmann family. All of Checkter’s maternal ancestors, both stallions and mares, were successful in S-level competitions under Gilbert Böckmann. His S-level successful dam, Ilonka (sport name Lila), was a finalist in the 2005 Bundeschampionat. She produced the licensed stallion Check In (2005 OS licensing reserve champion), who competed at the 2018 World Equestrian Games in Tryon under Samantha McIntosh (NZL). She also produced the 1.55 m-successful Check Up/Vincent Elbers (GER) and the 1.45 m-successful Lavender Brown/Gilbert Böckmann (GER), further proving her excellence as a broodmare.

His great-granddam, Gilana (sport name Lady Liberty), was an international show jumper under Gilbert Böckmann and Malin Baryard (SWE). She is the dam of the licensed stallion Caravazzo. The great-great-granddam, Ghana, produced the 1.50 m-successful licensed stallion Corghano. This renowned Hanoverian dam line of Norm has also produced well-known stallions such as Carridam PJ, First Gotthard, Fürstengold, Firth of Lorne/Marcus Ehning (GER), and the influential sire Kashmir van Schuttershof, who competed at CSI5* level under Philippe Lejeune (FRA).
